I wonder if it has any other uses beyond gumbo? I really enjoy filé powder (I use Zatararin's, which is pretty easy to find and because in New Orleans they jazz it up)because I also really love sassafras. I really enjoy adding this mix to my club soda and dream of making sassafras ice cream one day. There are a lot of sassafras trees in the woods near the place we call "down the shore", really a cabin on Bird River, that I have fond memories of picking the mitten shaped leaves and smelling them.
